Free Essays on Levi Strauss
Levi Strauss When the name Levi Strauss comes to mind, most people would probably think of denim jeans or his company, Levi Strauss & Co. Thatââ¬â¢s because he invented the first riveted pair of jeans and he started the first and largest manufacturer of denim jeans. Levi Strauss was born on February 26, 1829 in Buttenheim, Bavaria what is now known as Germany. In 1843, Strauss sailed from Bremerhaven to New York City to join his two brothers, Jonas and Louis, who already had a successful wholesale textile and tailoring business. After staying only a few days in New York, he decided to go to his uncleââ¬â¢s ranch in Louisville, Kentucky. Strauss spent the next five years of his life there learning English and the ways of the Americans, so he could take over his uncleââ¬â¢s ranch. In 1853 he returned to New York and he also became an American citizen. After word spread about the gold rush in California, Levi decided to travel west to San Francisco to get rich. He did not have intentions of looking for gold, but instead he wanted to sell supplies. When Strauss arrived in San Francisco during March of 1853, he established a wholesale dry-goods store that was located on 90 Sacramento Street. He began by selling tents and wagon covers to the Forty-Niners, but he found no market in the products. So he used the stout canvas that he brought with him to make very durable pants. The miners found the pants very useful since they were always on the ground. Strauss named these ââ¬Å"durable pantsâ⬠waist overalls. He soon began selling them as fast as he could make them. In 1872, a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis wrote a letter suggesting they put rivets in the jeans to reinforce the seams. In 1872, Strauss hired Jacob Davis and they began producing riveted blue denim jeans and jackets. Soon Strauss and Davis applied for a United States Patent on July 5,1... Self-Disclosure, Gender, and Communication Research Paper
Self-Disclosure, Gender, and Communication - Research Paper Example Yes, but not too soon. I am answering this from a perspective of a single person. Self-disclosure is a liberating and in deepens a relationship but it should be done with timing and caution. Revealing too much too soon may scare the other party. Self-disclosure is appropriate when a certain degree of intimacy and length of being together has already been established. 3. What about gender differences? Remember, although research has found differences in gender communication, it has also found similarities. What kind of similarities between genders have you experienced?à I agree that each gender has different communication style. This was best illustrated in John Grayââ¬â¢s book Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus that tells that men communicate in exact quantifiable terms while women communicate in descriptive terms (1993). Still, this does not mean that they do not have a convergent point in communication. Both have a need to relate to each other emotionally, to be understood and to be appreciated. I felt that I do not fit into Terri Orbuchââ¬â¢s generalization because her study was based on married couples of which I am not. I would not know how to relate to the conclusion that couples of more than 50 years only communicate no more than three minutes in an hour long dinner (Orbuch, 2011). I agree however on her point of view that real communication involves really knowing and relating to the other person and not just a conversation about certain tasks. Orbuch, Terri (2011). Educational Traditions Film Analysis - Finding Forrester Essay
Educational Traditions Film Analysis - Finding Forrester - Essay Example Racism and Class relations are evident in the film; they portray the extent of racial discrimination against blacks. A number of scenes and events in the movie depict racism. One of the scenes includes the part where the man owning a BMW has racial prejudices against black people. The man thinks that the black people living in Bronx do not have the slightest knowledge about car brands from Germany. Jamal shows that blacks can also be sophisticated by telling him the history of BMW. Such a discriminating act portrays how blacks may be disadvantaged because of their skin color (Tozer 542). Another instance of racism can be seen when Jamalââ¬â¢s English teacher, Mr. Crawford accuses him of plagiarism. The teacher doubts whether Jamal can be able to write such masterly, original texts. Since Jamal is a young black man, the teacher thinks that Jamal copies texts from Forester. The teacher sees Jamal as inadequate, yet he shines more than his white counterparts in class. This scene reveals traditional education thoughts and ideologies that discriminated against black students. Although Jamal gets a chance to attend a private school because of his high scores, other students think that the young man goes there to win games (Tozer 543). The basketball coach lowers Jamalââ¬â¢s level of education so that he can be able to concentrate on sports. This portrays the negative thoughts of the coach on Jamal; he thinks that Jamal cannot manage sports and education. In addition, this offer serves to make the school become successful in sports. This incidence can be regarded as an attempt to exploit the basketball talent of Jamal. Besides, the offer also perpetuates the ideology that black students cannot be superior to whites. This scene represents the widespread discrimination of blacks in the school setting. Jamal acts as a sacrifice so that the school can perform well in basketball sports competitions. Bing Vs. Google Essay Example for Free
Bing Vs. Google Essay Over the past couple of days, I have been using Google and Bing to search for the same various topics to see if there were any differences and ultimately define which was the best search engine for me. I found that when I was looking for information or researching, I preferred Google to Bing ultimately because of the layout and ease. For one of my tests, I searched the word ââ¬Å"Penguinsâ⬠. I found that I preferred the layout of Google because it was cleaner and helped me stay on task. When I was using Bing, I felt a little overwhelmed with all the information that I was given on the results page and I ended up being pretty distracted by the tweets on the right hand side along with videos Bing suggested I look at. However, information wise, I found that both search engines gave me sufficient information, not one being better than the other. Some other key benefits I found that Google has that Bing does not is the ââ¬Å"I feel luckyâ⬠button. This allows you to save that one more extra step by taking you directly to the most popular page for what youââ¬â¢re searching for. Google also allows you to remove certain older searches from the drop down list with one easy click on the ââ¬Å"removeâ⬠button. Another benefit Google offers, is the ability to preview the search results without leaving the main results page. Finally, my favorite is the homepage where they change the word ââ¬Å"Googleâ⬠into different fonts, formats and games everyday. Because I own a Mac Book, and I use Chrome to do my entire web browsing, searching on Google has become second nature to me. I use Chrome because it starts up quickly. It also allows me to type anything into the URL address box and Chrome takes me directly to Google with the results. Although I will continue to use Google, I do believe that Bing can catch up to Google in search perhaps through disruptive innovation or exposing the search engine to the younger generations early on. If Bing were to create a search engine to compete with Chrome, I think it would be highly profitable, especially if this new operating system were available for free download and accessible to anyone for development. I also believe that one of the biggest problems that Bing faces is turning the users who have been using Google for years, to try Bing. And even if Bing faces up to the challenge, itââ¬â¢s hard to break a habit, especially in this case since Chrome makes it easier for the researcher to search on Google. Some other factors that could help Bing, is if Google makes a mistake. For example, whenever Facebook makes a new change, you see all the complaints in your newsfeed; however, people keep using it because there is nothing else like it out there. If Google changes certain attributes about their search engine, that the majority of people do not like, Bing can very well serve as their backup and in an instant become their number one search engine. However, since I still prefer using Google, I will continue to ââ¬Å"Google itâ⬠.
